In the past, when women constituted a small percentage of the working population, a woman was appointed as a woman constable. This was to satisfy the needs of the Police Department which found male constables not wanting to deal with the increasing number of females who were getting involved in criminal activities. There were also accusations of harassment of female suspects by male policemen. Social groups too decried the absence of female policewomen to deal with female suspects. For a start one police woman was engaged and posted to the Police Academy for initial training. On her first day at the Academy, which seemed to be a new building she had the urge to use the restroom and so she went from floor to floor looking for a female toilet. She was utterly surprised that not only was there no female toilet, the Academy did not have any toilets either. She could not believe her eyes.
