The plantation had engaged a male Chinese man servant for the expatriate manager. He had special skills and could do a variety of tasks including cooking meals and other household tasks. He also had two local assistants to assist him. Naturally he commanded a higher salary which was the envy of the other household assistants. He always got the praise of his manager and other visitors for the diligence with which he served. Because of this, the assistants were always waiting for an opportunity to cause him problems. That morning the manager was full of praise for the way the servant had pressed his clothes. This was a bit too much for the assistants to bear. They hatched a plan to get him into trouble and took away the sprinkler that the servant used to press the boss’s clothes. They hid the sprinkler and awaited the next day to see him unable to do the pressing work on the boss’s shirts. However the next day the man servant looked around for the sprinkler and not finding it used his own resources. He took a gulp of water and used his mouth to squirt water on the shirts before pressing them-the effect was the same much to the disappointment of the two assistants.
