I was working in Kluang when I started my degree program in Social Science at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, as a working student. This was an off campus program and it required students to study away from the University, attend classes on campus once a year, around December each year, and complete the final year as a full time student.
It was my final year and it required me to attend the course on a full time basis which meant I had to take no pay leave for my final year, a sacrifice for my working wife and schooling kids. My wife encouraged me on and said I should complete the program as it would open doors for my further advancement in my career. I was sceptical as I was already in a senior position in what was known as a pass degree service and I was happy in my job.
My course mates were pursuing the degree that would qualify them for a job equivalent to my grade and were wondering why I was there in the first place. I explained that I had started the program, was in my final year and it was only natural that I should wish to complete the program. They did not see the logic in it leaving me to wonder whether I had made a wrong decision.
I continued nevertheless and completed my degree.
This directly led to me later being granted the award of a one year scholarship to do a post graduate program in the United Kingdom.
After completing the post graduate program, I was posted to Penang on a promotion as an Assistant Director. However that lasted a few months only as the then Assistant Director in Kangar was suspended from duty for corrupt practices - which then resulted in me being chosen to fill up the resultant vacancy.
