I was on a one year scholarship to do my Diploma in Labour Studies, at the Polytechnic of North London, having just completed my Bachelor of Social Science. I had been on a year’s leave to do the basic degree and had been away from the office for the last two years.
One day I was walking to my hostel in Newington Green in North London when I came across a group of Malaysians talking animatedly in my native language “Tamil” at the Holborn Law College campus premises. I was surprised to see so many of my countrymen in this foreign land. I joined the group and learnt they were all law students looking for scrutineers to witness their forthcoming elections to appoint representatives of Malaysian students in the UK.
I introduced myself and told them I was on a one year programme to do a post graduate diploma and would be happy to assist them. And so I became a scrutiniser for their elections to be held soon. Among the group I was introduced to Peter Raiappan who was attending a labor administration course. In later years, Peter became my boss in the Labour Department and went on to become a close family friend.
