I had just been appointed as a Junior Assistant Commissioner (JAC ) of the Labour Department in Ipoh. I informed the new Department that I would be reporting for work on Monday the 3rd of October after the weekend…
However my current Head of Department agreed I could leave on the 1st of October. And so instead of the 3rd, I went to the new Office on the 1st of October. I was asked to meet up with the Head of Department. He was obviously a busy man judging from the number of people waiting to see him. The secretary gave me a slip indicating No.8 indicating there were seven people ahead of me. I told her that I was not on a social visit but to report for work. She dismissed me with a wave of her hand and told me to sit down and take my turn. After two hours, my number was called. I went into the room and handed the slip bearing No.8 to the Chief. He looked genuinely surprised and asked whether I had brought the tender documents. I told him I am here to report for work as a newly appointed JAC.
He pressed a bell on his table and when his Secretary came in he asked her “what is this? ”The Secretary looked at me and said, “ I knew he looked too young to be a contractor, but when I asked if he was here to submit the tender, he nodded his head and so I gave him a number.” The chief roared into laughter and told his Secretary, “Come meet Mr.8, our new JAC”. She was then instructed to take me to the office and introduce me to the other staff. My nickname Mr.8 lasted a few weeks until the humor wore off.
