My first appointment as a Junior Assistant Commissioner was to the Department at Alor Setar, with sub-offices in Sg. Petani and Kulim. We had a senior person in Sungai Petani who used to cover for the Head of Department in Alor Setar whenever he was away. He was a very amiable person who mixed with everyone irrespective of rank. Generous to a fault, he would buy drinks for the entire office when he came down to Alor Setar. While he was stationed in Sungai Petani, he lived in Butterworth with his family and travelled by bus from Butterworth to Sungai Petani daily. He was such an amiable character that if he was late, the bus driver seeing him not at the usual spot would park his bus on the roadside to await his arrival, much to the annoyance of the other passengers. But their annoyance would dissipate the moment they saw his smiling face apologising profusely for his lateness.
