My brother Raj, was a great organiser of sporting activities.
When he was in Form 1 he organised a football Club known as Ipoh Boys’ Club. We used to challenge other clubs in the nearby kampongs at Football and athletics. We did not try Hockey as it would have been expensive to buy hockey sticks for the team. I was quite good at pole vault and athletics. In athletics I used to get the number two spot but always lost out to a “Jago Kampong. “ My brother recognised this problem and since he was the one who bought gifts to be given to the winners, he made sure the second prize would be more valuable than the first prize.
One day he was approached by a member of the team to ask for the sizes of football jerseys for the team as he had found a donor who had agreed to sponsor jerseys. He knew the configuration by heart and rattled it out. The team member produced 14 jerseys of varying sizes which my brother proudly offered to the kampong players with instructions they should wear the coming Saturday when there was a match with the team from the neighbouring kampong. Come Saturday the team members indeed looked smart in their gleaming jerseys and adjourned to the football field to commence play.
After the first half with no score yet despite the new jerseys, the team continued the play when suddenly a fight occurred at the side of the field. The game was halted and all the players zoomed to the spot to hear what the commotion was about. They found three burly men assaulting their team member who had provided the jerseys being assaulted. All the team members intervened and were told by one of the three burly men that they were from the law firm where the guy who had donated the jerseys was working. He had allegedly stolen an office check which he was supposed to bank in and they wished to take him to the police station. We learnt that the employer had not made out a police report yet. We told them they ought to make a report and it was for the police to arrest him if indeed he had stolen the cheque.
We enquired from our team member if the accusations were true. He admitted the charge and said he had used part of the money to buy the jerseys we were wearing. We removed our jerseys and told our team member he should have told us the truth. We passed the hat around, collected enough money to reimburse the office for their loss and they agreed not to pursue the matter further. We continued the wearing of the jerseys after the matter was resolved as we felt that we were now entitled to wear them as we had settled the payment due on the jerseys.
