Work life in those days was vastly different from what you know it to be today.
I reported for work early one morning, when I was informed by the Office Assistant that the boss wanted to see me.
On reaching his office I saw my boss with his arms akimbo and looking for something. I enquired if he needed any help. He beckoned me to sit down and asked “Do you know what I was doing at home last evening?”. Before I could say anything he retorted, “cooking”! He added “The wife was in one of her loud moods and throwing tantrums. The children had not had their meals after breakfast. I had to do the cooking to feed the hungry children.” He demonstrated with both his hands to show he was cooking. I tried to excuse myself by stating I had to leave soon for field work. He exclaimed “What field work, when your boss is agitated? Sit down! You are excused from field work today.”
Thus it was that I had to sit down to listen to the boss ranting, while my colleague was despatched with a note to notify the employers I was supposed to visit that my visit to their offices was cancelled owing to unavoidable circumstances.
