When I was in STD 6 we used to visit my cousins in Batu Gajah(BG). In BG we seldom stayed home in the day time. A few miles away an area known as Bemban was full of mining pools. We had some neighbours who could not pronounce my name & called me “Kanutty” , which sounds like a young calf in Tamil. There was a pretty girl in the house who was the niece of my neighbor. We got along well and used to go out for “Ice Kacang” i.e. shaved ice with nuts and coloured sugar water at a stall in town. We used to cycle from our home in the new village to town.
One day my neighbour, a cousin and me decided to cycle from Ipoh to Batu Gajah. We took a detour from the town known as Pusing to the mining area as it was a shorter route than going through the town. As was our practice, we ditched our bicycles on the ground and jumped into the shallow river for a swim. My partner excused herself and said she wanted to ease herself in the bushes nearby. After a few minutes I heard her cries for help. The first time the cries were loud; later they were muffled sounds as if she was having her hand on her mouth. As we strained our ears to hear where the sounds were coming from, we realised it was from our friend crying for help. We ran in the direction where our friend had gone. As we neared the bushes we heard a rustling sound and saw one guy running away, We gave chase but soon lost him. We then focussed our attention on our friend. She was weeping, her hair was ruffled and face had some scratch marks. It was not difficult to guess the reasons for her trauma. We consoled her, gave her a handkerchief and a comb and told her we could not catch the culprit. She said “I have not seen the guy before, but he had a terrible body odour”. As we were pondering whether we should report to the police she responded vehemently, “no! no!” “ I don’t wish to report to the police. A few years ago my sister had a similar experience and now no one wants to marry her as they say she has been defiled by someone else, though there is no truth in it”.
This sadly, is how the public view the police because of a few bad hats in the force. We had no choice but to respect her wishes.
