Our office bordered the Central Market. Some of us were sadists having plenty of time at our disposal. All of us were males with one or two female staff who were merely observers. Quite often we would empty our ashtrays, roll up the cigarette butts and ashes, wrap them in a nice bundle and tie it up with a red or white ribbon that was available in our store.
As our office window louvres overlooked the market we would take up positions as observers and throw the nicely packed bundle on the cycle track leading up to the market. Some riders were not bothered about the parcel on their tracks. Some curious ones would stop their bicycles, stoop down and pick up the packet. At times they would open the packets on the spot and on discovering the disgusting contents would discard it then and there. Some would pick up the packets and place them in the carriers to open later.
We were young and regarded these as fun and with great hilarity. In our defence, I can only say that we also had adults in our midst who never attempted to correct us.
